International Smiling Day

28 Apr , 2015   Video

On the 28th of April, Agora Aveiro celebrated the International Smiling Day. We spread, all around the city, red balloons and flyers with “tira um sorriso” written on. This way, everyone could take a smile for themselve.

The International Smiling Day was first celebrated in 1963 by Harvey Ball, an artist from Worcester. Ball is the creator of the internationally recognised “smiley” image.

This activity came in the spirit of healthy lifestyles, and smiling is pretty healthy. It decreases anxiety and blood pressure, strengthens the immune system, tones facial muscles, and even improves concentration. Our volunteer Tanja created a video for this activity that you can watch here. Watch it and smile.

According to the Dalai Lama, happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions. Try to find in your day-to-day life, a way to make yourself, and others, happy. If you would like to get involved and celebrate happiness check out the official website for this initiative.

You don’t have to go all out and do something big. Small actions can have a big impact, so, start small, start with a smile. In the words of Etta James: “When I look out at the people and they look at me and they’re smiling, then I know that I’m loved. That is the time when I have no worries, no problems.”
