Mental Health Day: (Dis)connect!

18 Oct , 2017   Video

Let us guess, your dinner was being boring and you decided to pick up your smartphone and slide your thumb, hoping to find something that breaks the silence? Or were you having your free time, after a long day of classes or work, and you decided that the best option was to spend that time scrolling through social media? Or maybe, you did not choose at all, maybe you were not even aware that when your mind was free you felt the need of occupying it with the help of your smartphone.

In this post, that stopped the dance of your thumb, you can watch how did the activity that Agora Aveiro organised for celebrating the Mental Health day, on the 15th of October at Glicínias, occurred. The challenge was simple. We invited people who were casually passing by to turn off their phones and join us around a table covered with colourful anti-stress balls.

Overall, the participants felt good during the challenge. But what if they didn’t have Agora Aveiro volunteers to talk with? What if they could not communicate, would they feel the need of using their phone? Where would their mind find shelter?

This is a controversial topic, but some studies report the dependency on smartphones as a real phenomenon pointing to their impact in our mental health. With this activity we aimed that the participants got aware of their relation with the technology they possess and what was its impact on their mental health.

Mental Health Day: (Dis)connect!

Mental health is not only the absence of disease, it also includes physical, mental and social well-being, according to the World Health Organisation. Although there is the tendency to separate physical and mental health they mutually interfere witch each other. Furthermore, mental health issues are not an individual problem, they also affect people who deal with someone suffering from mental health issues.

All this technology we have to communicate and obtain information is so powerful, so revolutionary and has such a remarkable potential. It is in our hands to use it for improving our lives and not the reverse. And after this post? What are you going to do? Are you going to continue to scroll down or will you challenge yourself, friends and family to find other healthy snacks to give to their mind? Where will your mind find shelter? (Dis)connect!
