One seed and one idea. All it takes is one of these small shells of life for a tree to stand up. A few more seeds, a few more ideas, and we have the beginnings of a forest. A forest that started in the smallest action, like a seed in a small pot.
Ideas, believe me, also work the same way! When shared, and planted, in the most tender minds, the richest fruits are obtained. Educating and raising awareness among the younger generation about the importance of forests is crucial and the Agora Aveiro volunteers can’t be indifferent to this!
We took the wood, the tools and our willpower and built, from scratch, our first “Kits Bolota” (Acorn Kits), perfectly capable of housing dozens of tiny sprouts. While some worked on the wood, others had to go out in search of seeds, especially collected in the area of Aveiro, to avoid genetic contamination of the expected future trees!
Lastly but not least, we needed our first guinea pigs - the children from Escola Básica de S. Bernardo. They promptly accepted our challenge to plant in each of our “Kit Bolota” dozens of native species, between oaks, willows and alders, so that one day, later, these same trees could be planted in the forests of Aveiro. Until then, the students of S. Bernardo have the mission to protect and care for all these sprouts until their transplantation time.
Our mission, on the other hand, is not over yet either! There are still many minds to sensitise and many seeds to germinate. For now, we return to the den for our well-earned rest, but beware that you never know when we might strike again!
Before we plant the future, we have to seed it!
“Semear o Futuro” (Seed The Future) is organized by Agora Aveiro and has the support of Aveiro’s City Hall, Programa Voluntariado Jovem para a Natureza e Florestas, and Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude I.P..
