It is in a world where the different age groups are often separated by rapid technological and social changes that Agora Aveiro's new initiative appears to break down barriers and rekindle some connections. A morning full of didactic, interactive games and endless stories proves to be a vital bridge to unite the elderly with the younger generations.
We live in a society that is highly focused on the present, absorbed by new technologies and the problems that constantly surround us and inadvertently disconnect us from the past. The elderly, with their immensity of stories and experiences, often end up being relegated to oblivion and loneliness, rather than being valued for the richness of their experiences and the fragility in which age envelops them.
Since we are aware of these problems, we decided, as an association, to take another project to the streets in conjunction with Gafanha do Carmo´s Community Center and contribute to a different morning full of activities.
So, on October 11th, we challenged the users of the day care center to come to the Murteira-Vista Alegre Picnic Park and explore with us a world of games created by young people and, in this way, highlight the impact that the younger generations can have on the older ones and vice versa.
The positive impact of games is evident not only in the improvement of older people's cognitive skills, but also in the revitalization of traditions and the strengthening of community ties. As the elderly share their memories and experiences, younger generations gain a deeper understanding of their past, ultimately enriching the cultural tapestry of their lives.
In a world where hustle and bustle and technology can often create distances between people, games emerge as a powerful tool for connection, reminding us of the importance of honoring age, aging, valuing the wisdom of our elders and creating a society truly interconnected.
Being present, listening and learning from each other not only enriches our lives, it also strengthens us as a united community.
“Jogos Sem Idade” is part of the “Random Acts of Kindness” project. It was made in association with Centro Comunitário da Gafanha do Carmo. It also had the the support of the Municipality of Aveiro and the Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude I.P..
