We made this idea grow

A project for the promotion of sustainability of the forest ecosystems and awareness of the importance and value of the Portuguese indigenous forest.

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes and 9 seconds

For Agora Aveiro, there are no impossible challenges nor excuses to be made when the subject is preservation of biodiversity and the indigenous forests - we grew the “Plantar o Futuro” project!

Originally a seedling from the Biology students at the University of Aveiro, it flowered into the plantation of thousands of trees in the Buçaco forest, Albergaria-a-Velha and Lousada. This year, the challenge was embraced by all students, teachers and employees that committed themselves to sponsor an indigenous tree.

During the afternoon of the 12th of December, we delivered a total of 2000 young indigenous  trees to students and employees of the UA, including but not limited to strawberry trees, pine trees, oaks and holly trees. Along with the trees, the sponsors received an informative booklet, illustrated by our team and with the scientific support of the BioLiving Association, containing directions for the care and maintenance of the young trees.

In the following months, between February and March, the sponsors will be called to action in the transplantation of the young trees in the terrains allotted to us by the County of Estarreja, Cabeço Santo project in Águeda and the University of Aveiro.

This is a project we grew with the purpose of promoting sustainability in the forest ecosystems and raise awareness to environmental education, amplified through direct actions that contribute to the recovery of the native Portuguese forest.

And because change can’t happen without partners, we give huge thanks to Associação BioLiving, Quercus Aveiro, Núcleo de Estudantes de Biologia - AAUAv, Núcleo de Cinema e Fotografia - AAUAv, Departamento de Biologia da Universidade de Aveiro, Município de Lousada, Universidade de Aveiro and Câmara Municipal de Aveiro. We’d still like to thank Veolia, Ecomobile - Aluguer de Automóveis, The Navigator Company, Amorim Cork Composites, Sementes de Portugal, Argex and Casa Martelo. This project has the support of the IPDJ - Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude, I.P. and the Programa Voluntariado Jovem para a Natureza e Florestas.

Above all, change cannot happen without you - Make this idea grow! Follow all the steps of the project through Facebook and get to know other initiatives we’ve developed in the area of Sustainability.

“We made this idea grow

Do you feel it’s too complex

the challenge of making something for the nature?

And you,,

small and imponent,

when you see the fires

that devastate the Portuguese

autochthonous forest”
