Connecting different generations has become an increasingly complex challenge, especially in a context where the fast pace of modern life and the constant use of new technologies create natural barriers. In Portugal, where around 26.6% of the population is over the age of 65, the country faces one of the highest aging rates in Europe, ranking 4th within the European Union in this regard. This scenario highlights the urgency of initiatives that promote healthy and active aging. Additionally, nearly 40% of Portuguese seniors over 80 live alone, which exacerbates the sense of isolation and social vulnerability.
In this context, activities that encourage intergenerational interaction are not only beneficial but essential to combat loneliness, increase well-being, and strengthen the role of the elderly in the community, while also fostering dialogue and understanding between generations.
Agora Aveiro addresses this issue by promoting moments of joy, with educational and interactive games, revealing an effective method to bring the elderly closer to the younger generations.
To tackle this challenge, Agora Aveiro gathered its volunteers on October 1st, at 14:30h, at Lar Residencial - CASCI, with whom the partnership was developed. The initiative aimed to provide a special afternoon for the elderly in celebration of International Day of Older People. The activity included various games such as bowling, “malha” game, fishing game, ring toss, among others, creating an environment of fun and interaction, strengthening bonds, and creating memories, with approximately 22 participants involved.
This was not the first time that "Jogos sem Idade" took place: the previous action occurred on July 10th, in collaboration with Centro Comunitário da Gafanha do Carmo and Associação de Solidariedade Social Casa Mãe de Aradas (ASSCMA), when a morning of playful and interactive activities was organized, bringing joy and dynamism to the elderly present.
In these moments, age takes a back seat, giving way to smiles that reflect the well-being of the participants. More than just a gathering of activities and games, these initiatives are an opportunity to share experiences, where the elderly relive moments from their youth, and the younger ones have the chance to learn about different times.
“Jogos Sem Idade” is part of the “Random Acts of Kindness” project. It was carried out in partnership with Centro de Ação Social do Concelho de Ílhavo - (CASCI). It also had the support of the Câmara Municipal de Aveiro and the Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude I.P..
