Last Saturday, Agora Aveiro, as part of the Projecto Au-Au”, once again took to the streets - this time with hands and hearts ready to help those who need it most: the animals sheltered by AFECTU - Associação de Felinos e Caninos Todos Unidos.

The initiative translated into a morning of volunteering dedicated to supporting the association’s kennel, where Agora Aveiro volunteers joined AFECTU’s team to assist with daily tasks, particularly cleaning and maintaining the boxes. Among brooms, buckets, and many wagging tails, the morning became a moment of genuine cooperation and empathy.

The tireless effort of AFECTU and so many other associations stands as a true pillar of resilience in the face of an alarming national reality. According to data from the Direção-Geral de Alimentação e Veterinária (DGAV), an average of 115 companion animals are abandoned every day in Portugal, a number that exceeds 30,000 each year. These statistics, which reveal the lack of real progress in animal protection policies, serve as a painful reminder that this fight is far from over and that the role of civic associations is now more essential than ever.

It was in this context of urgency that the most striking moment of the visit occurred, the unexpected arrival of six new puppies, victims of abandonment. The scene, though a reflection of the sad reality faced by so many animals, was also a vivid demonstration of the importance of AFECTU’s work. The daily commitment of its volunteers ensures that every new resident finds shelter, food and, above all, affection.

These six little ones are already receiving the care they need and, like the other animals at the shelter, will soon be available for adoption. The hope is that they will quickly find families ready to welcome them with the love and responsibility they deserve.

This action by “Projecto Au-Au” reinforces an essential message: volunteering and responsible adoption are powerful gestures of change. Small acts can build a real and transformative impact on the lives of those without a voice.

Agora Aveiro and AFECTU believe that respect for animals is also a reflection of our humanity. Days like this remind us that when we unite for a just cause, we can make the world a slightly better place - one bark and one kind gesture at a time.

Projeto Au-Au” is part of Agora Aveiro’s “Random Acts of Kindness” project. It has Kaizen Pet Food Providers as its “Main Partner”, the University of Aveiro as its “Golden Partner”, and Biobom as “Silver Partner”. The project is carried out in partnership with school clusters of  Aveiro, Dr. Mário Sacramento, José Estêvão and Rio Novo do Príncipe. It is also supported by the Municipality of Aveiro and the IPDJ – Portuguese Institute for Sport and Youth.
