One year after our initial meeting in Tallinn, where we kicked off the Erasmus+ project "Media and Information Literacy of Youth in Green Topics" with our partners “Learning Library” from Estonia and “DOMAS” from Croatia, we are thrilled to share that we recently hosted our final evaluation meeting in Aveiro this December. Over the past year, the project has involved countless hours of hard work, collaboration with hundreds of people, and dozens of online meetings and exchanges. Now it is time to share the fruits of our work - the final outputs of this enriching project, with the Toolkit for youth workers and educators on Media and Information Literacy of Youth in Green Topics being one of the key highlights.

The inspiration for this project stemmed from the ever-growing use of social media, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital media, which provide young people with an overwhelming amount of information. While these tools offer new opportunities, they also raise important questions about whether young people are prepared to responsibly and safely navigate this vast ocean of information, particularly when it comes to using these technologies for societal betterment. The rapid pace of technological development and the complexity of media consumption require a critical approach to understanding and processing information.

To address this challenge, we began the project by conducting a comprehensive research study across the three partner countries. This research helped us to understand the media literacy landscape and the specific needs of youth in the context of green topics. Based on the insights gathered, we developed the Toolkit for youth workers and educators. This resource includes 20 workshops, providing ready-to-use materials for facilitators, including trainers and teachers, to effectively engage young people in discussions about media literacy, with a focus on environmental and green issues.

The Toolkit is already available in Portuguese and English and is designed to help educators address the pressing topics of today, such as the influence of digital media, AI, and misinformation, while encouraging critical thinking in relation to environmental issues. The activities within the Toolkit are aimed at empowering youth to become responsible digital citizens, capable of analyzing media messages, identifying credible sources, and engaging in meaningful dialogue about sustainability, climate change, and other environmental topics.

As part of the project, we also worked closely with local communities in all three countries to ensure that the Toolkit and its contents were not only relevant but also accessible. Through the workshops, we aim to equip youth workers and educators with the tools they need to foster critical thinking and media literacy, ultimately empowering young people to make informed decisions and become active participants in shaping a sustainable future.

But we’re not stopping there! We’re also excited to announce that the consortium will soon launch a certified e-learning course, with four modules designed specifically for young people. This course is free, easy to use, directly aimed at youth, and offers an interactive and engaging way for young people to learn about media literacy and its connection to green topics. It is designed to further support youth in becoming more critical and responsible consumers of digital media, equipping them with the skills to navigate the complex media landscape surrounding environmental issues.

We are grateful to have collaborated with our partners on this impactful project, and we look forward to the continued impact of this work in the years to come.
