“Eatwise”: Sustainable food and intercultural dialogue

This month, 30 youth workers from six different countries gathered in Bucharest for a vibrant and transformative training course. Over the course of three intensive days – filled with deep learning, meaningful conversations, and plenty of laughter – they emerged not only wiser but more conscious of environmental issues, social inclusion, and the surprising role that food plays in both.

Lifelong friendships were formed, professional connections established, and minds opened – thanks to the magic of Erasmus+.

This training course was part of the Erasmus+ KA2 Strategic Partnership project “Eatwise”, funded by the European Union and led by our Italian partners – Popoli Insieme association. Its main objective was to equip youth workers with the knowledge and tools needed to promote environmental sustainability and foster intercultural understanding within their local communities, with a strong focus on food and its ability to impact nature, lives, and break barriers.

Through engaging sessions led by international trainers, intercultural exchanges, and fascinating discussions, complex concepts became tangible and relevant. We tackled a wide range of topics – from eco-friendly solutions and conscious consumption to waste reduction and sustainable food choices – discovering that even the smallest steps can lead to meaningful change.

We also explored food through a cultural lens, gaining insight into the eating habits of different traditions. Special focus was placed on sustainable food systems and how they can serve as a powerful tool for intercultural dialogue.

The Eatwise project began last year with a transnational meeting in Bulgaria, where a strategic roadmap was created to promote sustainable food practices and deepen cultural exchange. As part of the project, we assessed the sustainability knowledge levels of young migrants across six countries through interviews and surveys. These efforts aimed to understand their needs and improve support in this area.

During the interviews, young migrants shared stories from their culinary traditions. From this rich exchange, a series of vegetarian and vegan recipes were selected to be featured in the upcoming Eatwise Cookbook  a resource that reflects both sustainability and cultural diversity.

The Eatwise Project stands out as a valuable initiative that raises awareness about sustainable food practices among young people while building bridges between cultures. Through food, we found not only nourishment but connection, empowerment, and a shared path toward a more inclusive and sustainable future.

We warmly invite those who are interested in these topics to follow our progress through our social media channels on Instagram and Facebook where the final outputs will be shared in the following months.

“Eatwise” is led by Popoli Insieme, with Agora Aveiro as a partner and granted by Erasmus+ programme. It also has the support of the Municipality of Aveiro, and the Portuguese Institute for Sports and Youth, I.P..
