Solidarity Superheroes: a year that stayed in everyone’s hearts
There are experiences that leave a mark on us forever, not only because of the places themselves, but also because of the people we meet, the conversations we have, and the parts of ourselves that come alive in the process.

There are experiences that leave a mark on us forever, not only because of the places themselves, but also because of the people we meet, the conversations we have, and the parts of ourselves that come alive in the process. That’s exactly what happened with the Solidarity Superheroes project, which over the course of a year brought four young international volunteers to Aveiro. They came wanting to make a difference and ended up transforming not only the lives of those they supported, but also their own.
For several months, Simon, Xènia, Ines and Chiara became part of the daily life at Casa Vera Cruz, a local social institution with a strong presence in the community. They supported families facing economic hardship, worked with migrant communities, children and women survivors of domestic violence. But beyond the practical help, they brought joy, openness, empathy, curiosity, and new ideas. They became part of the team, part of the city, part of the community. And they left something special behind.
More than statistics or reports, we prefer to look at what doesn’t fit in a graph: the heartfelt messages, the memories, the gratitude, the friendships that continue.
Going to Aveiro and meeting you was the best thing I could have done. I felt very lost and I needed to stop and think about what I really wanted. I learned so much from you, and without realising it, I discovered a version of myself that I actually liked. When I came back to Barcelona I was afraid of feeling sad for not being able to relive such a beautiful year, but now I’m just thankful we are still in touch.
– Xènia
This experience really changed my life. I met so many great people from all over the world, learnt a lot about myself, was able to make a real and positive impact by helping people in need and found out what I want to do next. I loved my life here in Aveiro: the culture, the people, the weather, the city and of course the beach. I even started surfing! These 11 months were simply unbelievable and I am so happy and grateful that I could be part of this project.

The project was developed within the framework of the European Solidarity Corps, an initiative of the European Commission that offers young people, aged 18 to 30, the opportunity to participate in projects with social impact, both in their own countries and abroad. For the volunteers, it’s a chance to learn, grow and actively contribute. For the organisations and communities that welcome them, it’s a chance to exchange, to connect and to build something meaningful together.
As the coordinating organisation, Agora Aveiro ensured the volunteers’ well-being, learning process and integration, organising regular check-ins, mentoring, and moments of reflection based on the “Youthpass methodology”. Casa Vera Cruz, as the hosting organisation, welcomed them with open arms and benefited not only from their dedication and time, but also from their ideas, their cultural input and the energy they brought into the team.
We truly believe volunteering has this unique power, the power to build bridges between people, cultures and worlds. To help us grow, not just as individuals but as communities. To remind us that solidarity isn’t just a word, it’s something we choose to practice together.
Thank you Simon, Xènia, Ines and Chiara for your time, your courage, and your hearts. Aveiro will always have a place for you.
